Edge of Extinction Story and History

In the mid 21st century, humanity got what it was asking for.

After thousands of years of exploiting the Earth's resources and exterminating earth species in the name of our own needs, humanity met up with a alien force even more greedy and callous then ourselves. They wanted our planet, and didn't have any use for the life on it. They attacked the same day they entered the atmosphere, and inside of a week, tiny underground pockets of humanity sheltered the only life left on Earth. Not even that satisfied the invaders - they came underground after us. And humanity teetered on the Edge of Extinction.

But humanity has always been nothing if not resourceful under pressure. One of the last humans discovered a way to download his mind into a computer and thereby evade the invaders, at the sacrifice of their very bodies. Every remaining human who was able followed their example. And for the next few years, digitial humanity quietly built a liberation force deep under the surface of the Earth.

Seven years after the day the last human body died, the liberation force burst on to the surface and engaged the invaders. The battle was surprisingly one-sided and quick, as the invaders were defeated so quickly that they left many resources behind. Predictably, the remaining digital humans argued over what to do with those exotic technologies, and how they should rebuild the world.

But as has always been the case with humanity, it was only a matter of time before someone decided to fight the others for what they wanted. It's human nature, after all...
